August Hedgerow Momentarily

Thin as splinters,

butterflies

borne on white wings

like flags,

flitting over the hedgerow

like scraps of paper

wind-blown.

Dallying over the brambles,

wings

bright as lighthouses;

careless

like children playing

as birds watch,

beaks like mousetraps.
